Jonah 3:1-10

Nineveh, the heart of the the great Assyrian kingdom, repented at the preaching of Jonah. It was unexpected – even by the preacher. Yet it happened.

This was a revival! Everyone turned – from the greatest to the least person.

What can we see?

We see God’s salvation reaching out to non-Jews long before the coming of the Messiah. God was fulfilling his covenant to Abraham, that in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed. A foretaste of the grace we enjoy today.

We also see God’s mercy at work in relenting of the punishment he had threatened (v.10).

Let us not lose hope over anyone or any people. However godless a person or society is, it is not beyond the reach of God’s mercy.

If only they would acknowledge their sin.
If only they would humble themselves.
If only they would turn to him.

Let us pray for the city of Lagos.
Let us pray for Nigeria.
Let us pray she would turn to God in repentance and look to Christ in faith.
