Already and Not-yet

Isaiah 35:5,6

The entrance of Christ into our world was like ‘water breaking forth in the wilderness, and stream in the desert’ (Isaiah 35:6).

He came in power, healing all who were oppressed of the Devil. He came literally opening the eyes of the blind, unlocking the ears of the deaf, and causing the lame to walk. He came bringing the kingdom of God to earth.

But all that Jesus did was a foretaste. He inaugurated the kingdom; we await it’s consummation. And right now, we live in the era between both, in the ‘already and not-yet’. God’s spirit has been poured out and is at work throughout the world. The body of Christ, the Church, marches on amidst opposition and distractions. The kingdom advances throughout the world, extending the knowledge of God as the waters cover the sea.

We await the return of Christ who will come to finally stamp out evil forever and make everything new.

At that time,

“The ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain gladness and joy,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”
(Isaiah 35:10)
